HIBISCUS as teacher

A Plant Spirit Journey

A journey of plant kinship, remembrance + return.

We gather with Hibiscus as plant, medicine, teacher + kin, entering into a practice of relationship through study, meditation, sensory exploration, medicine making, food, ritual + ancestral remembrance.

Throughout this journey, we learn the many ways of knowing a plant.

We study her botanical body + the ecosystems that sustain her. We meet her through taste, scent, touch + observation. We prepare food and medicine with our hands. We sit quietly in her presence. We explore the stories, traditions + cultural landscapes that have grown around her. And we listen for what can only be learned through time, attention + relationship.

Known as Akabana, the red flower is woven throughout the landscape of Okinawa—growing beside homes and roads, along fields and pathways, and near the tombs where families gather to remember their ancestors.

For those of us living far from the islands, these relationships with the living world can become threads of remembrance.

Plants can carry memory.

They can return us to foods, landscapes, stories + practices. They can awaken questions about where we come from and how we belong to the places where we now live. Through tending relationship with them, we may begin tending relationships with land, lineage, ancestors + ourselves.

Through Hibiscus, we explore plant spirit communication, herbalism, botanical study, ecological relationship, Okinawan plant lore, ancestral remembrance, food + medicine making, ritual, creativity + reciprocity.

This is a practice of learning to listen again.

To the plant.

To the body.

To the Earth.

To those who came before us.

And to the relationships that make our lives possible.

Hibiscus is an invitation to return through the living world.

What to Expect

There are plants we come to know because we seek them.

And there are plants that have been with us all along.

For many Okinawans, hibiscus is woven into the landscape of home—growing along roadsides and garden walls, forming hedges around houses and fields, flowering near family tombs.

For those of us who live far from the islands, plants can become another way of remembering.
